Here are some key areas of research conducted by Kentucky Equine Research:
1. Nutritional Studies: KER conducts extensive research on equine nutrition, investigating the nutrient requirements of horses and the effects of different dietary components on their health and performance. They explore topics such as energy metabolism, protein requirements, vitamin and mineral supplementation, and feed ingredient analysis to optimise equine diets.
2. Digestive Health: KER has conducted research on various aspects of equine digestive health, including gut function, microbial balance, and digestive disorders. They explore ways to improve digestive efficiency and prevent issues such as colic, gastric ulcers, and hind-gut disturbances.
3. Exercise Physiology: KER investigates the physiological responses of horses to exercise, aiming to enhance their athletic performance and recovery. This research focuses on areas such as muscle metabolism, oxygen transport, thermoregulation, and hydration strategies during exercise.
4. Forage and Pasture Management: KER studies the impact of forage quality, pasture management practices, and hay preservation techniques on equine health and nutrition. Their research helps develop guidelines for optimal forage utilisation and maintenance of healthy pastures.
5. Supplement Evaluation: KER conducts studies to evaluate the efficacy and safety of various equine supplements, including joint supplements, electrolyte formulations, and nutritional additives. This research helps horse owners make informed decisions about supplement choices.
6. Feeding Strategies: KER explores feeding strategies and management practices that promote optimal health and performance in horses. They investigate topics such as feeding frequency, meal size, feed processing methods, and timing of nutrient delivery.
Â
It’s important to note that while KER’s research contributes to the broader field of equine nutrition, they may collaborate or provide consultation to various feed manufacturers, including those producing Bluegrass horse feed.Â
