Tips to help keep your dog cool during hot weather

You definitely don’t want your dog overheating or feeling uncomfortable in hot weather, so here are some tips on keeping your beloved pouch cool:

Provide access to shade: Ensure that your dog has a shaded area where they can escape the direct sunlight. This could be under a tree, a covered patio, or using a doghouse with good ventilation.

Keep them indoors: If the temperatures are extremely high, it’s best to keep your dog indoors in an air-conditioned or well-ventilated environment. This is especially important during the hottest parts of the day.

Provide fresh water: Always keep a bowl of fresh, cool water available for your dog to drink from. Consider placing multiple water bowls in different areas of your home or yard to ensure easy access.

Use cooling mats or bandanas: Cooling mats or bandanas can help regulate your dog’s body temperature. These products are designed to stay cool and can provide relief when your dog lies on them or wears them around their neck.

Wet towels or misting: Dampen a towel with cool water and place it over your dog’s back or stomach. You can also use a spray bottle to mist their coat with water, which helps to evaporate and cool their body.

Avoid hot pavement: Asphalt or concrete surfaces can become scorching hot and burn your dog’s paws. Opt for walks during cooler times of the day or walk your dog on grassy areas.

Limit exercise: Reduce the intensity and duration of exercise during hot weather. Choose cooler times of the day, such as early morning or late evening, for walks and playtime.

Frozen treats: Provide your dog with frozen treats like ice cubes or frozen dog-friendly snacks. This can help cool them down from the inside out and provide a refreshing treat.

Use a kiddie pool or sprinkler: Set up a shallow kiddie pool or turn on a sprinkler in a safe area of your yard. Some dogs enjoy splashing in the water to cool off.

Watch for signs of overheating: Familiarise yourself with the signs of overheating in dogs, see below.

Remember, different dog breeds have varying heat tolerances, so it’s important to consider your dog’s specific needs. If you have any concerns about your dog’s health during hot weather, consult with your veterinarian for personalised advice.

How can you tell if your dog is overheating...

Excessive panting

Excessive drooling

Rapid or heavy breathing

Bright red gums and tongue

Weakness or lethargy

Vomiting or diarrhoea

Glazed eyes

Collapsing or seizures*

*In severe cases, dogs may collapse, have seizures, or lose consciousness. This is a medical emergency, and you should seek immediate veterinary assistance.

If you suspect that your dog is overheated, take action immediately to help cool them down. Move them to a cooler area, offer them cool (not cold) water to drink, and wet their body with cool (not cold) water using a towel or hose. It’s crucial to contact your veterinarian for guidance, as overheating can quickly progress to heatstroke, which is a life-threatening condition.
