Strip grazing is all about giving your horse access to munch on fresh grass.
You do this by fencing off a section of the field and moving it on a regular basis – which in turn gives the grass outside the fenced off area time to grow. Moving the whole fenced off area at the same time means you can move across the whole field, creating three areas.
Once you get to the end of the field all you do then is move the grazing area back to the start again.
Recovering area –Â this is where your horse has just moved on from.
The actual grazing area –Â this is where your horse is grazing
Resting area – the area where your horse will move to next.
There are a number of reasons why strip grazing is so useful with keeping a horse, the three I have chosen are:
To control weight –Â according to some Equestrian publications rates of obesity is considered to be as high as 70% in some pony populations. Obesity brings other issues including laminitis, heat tolerance, respiratory issues and joint strains.
Field protection –Â strip grazing also gives your pasture time to rest and recoup promoting healthy grass growth. A field which has been overgrazed gives the opportunity to fast growing weeds.
New Field – Strip grazing can also be used when introducing a new field to your horse. bit by bit increasing the size of the grazing area.
