There are many different types of horse fly repellent products available on the market, with the most commonly used are fly sprays, fly masks and fly sheets.
Fly sprays, are designed to repel or kill flies. When used properly, fly sprays can be effective at reducing the number of flies around a horse and may help prevent bites and other insect-related problems.
Do fly sprays actually work?
The effectiveness of fly spray on horses can vary depending on a variety of factors, including the type of spray used, the environment, and the individual horse’s susceptibility to flies. In general, most fly sprays are designed to provide protection for several hours, typically ranging from 6 to 12 hours.
However, the length of time that a fly spray remains effective can depend on factors such as the horse’s activity level, sweating, and exposure to water or rain. If a horse is very active and sweating heavily, for example, the fly spray may wear off more quickly and need to be reapplied sooner. Additionally, if a horse is exposed to water or rain, the fly spray may be washed away and lose its effectiveness.
It’s generally good practice to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and reapply fly spray as needed to ensure that your horse remains protected against flies and other biting insects. Some horse owners find that applying fly spray in the morning and again in the evening provides the best protection for their horses.
Fly masks and fly sheets also a great way to stop flies from getting to your horse and are much kinder to the environment than fly repellents and sprays. Fly masks are designed to cover the horse’s face and eyes, while fly sheets are designed to cover the horse’s body. These products can be effective at preventing flies from landing on the horse and may help reduce the risk of insect-related health problems.
However, it’s important to note that not all fly products are safe or effective for horses. Some products may contain harmful chemicals or may not be designed for use on horses. It’s always a good idea to consult with a veterinarian or equine specialist before using any new fly products on your horse.
