When it comes to laying your horse bedding across the whole of your stable floor, vets and equine professionals have agreed that a good covering of at least 15 to 20 cms (6 to 8 inches) is ideal. They have also advised us that rubber matting is great for supporting your horses tendons and should be laid where your horse stands for long periods of time, such as at their hay net.
Remember horse bedding has to provide padding and comfort for your horse as well as absorb urine and reduce ammonia odours.
There are many different types of horse bedding to choose from…
Pros
Straw for horse bedding is relatively cheap and when freshly laid, looks really nice in the stable. It also breaks down nicely as garden manure.
Cons
Straw is very bulky and you’ll beed a large covered area to store it.Â
Some horses like to munch their way through it, whilst some horses are allergic to it.
It can quickly turn to muck.
Pros
Chopped straw is dust extracted and teated so your horse won’t eat it. Wrapped in bales it’s a lot easier to store plus looks neat. As it’s chopped you get smaller muck heaps than normal straw.
Cons
It more expensive than just straw, however getting rid of it is a lot easier.
Pros
A very popular choice across the UK with many of our horse owners. It’s non palatable, easily available plus really easy to handle and store.
Cons
Can be quite hard to dispose of. Regular maintenance is needed in order to remove droppings.
Pros
Using wood pellets for horse bedding is relatively new but is becoming a big hit with our customers as it’s high absorbent, dust free and as an added bonus; eco friendly.
Cons
You need to add water once the bedding is down to make it non slippery which takes time.
Pros
Rubber matting can be put down as well as or on it’s own, as horse bedding.
It’s really easy to clean, non slippy and great value for money, in theory saving you from buying other bedding. Most horse owners use rubber matting as a base layer to go under their horse bedding. They are also versatile and can moved around the yard to places where the horse stand long periods of time such as any their hay net.
Cons
Slow too dry in winter, plus also a big cost at the very start.
